In January of 1884 LaMarcus Thompson filed the first U.S. patent for what was essentially America’s first roller coaster. Imagine you’re some 12 year old who has just finished hawking newspapers and you scrape together two nickels to go ride the thing out in Coney Island. The sheer uninhibited thrill! This is the experience Spielberg replicated with Jaws in 1975 when he invented the summer blockbuster. Now imagine you’re some 12 year old in 2010 who has just crushed multiple Mountain Dew’s before strapping into the coaster STEEL VENGEANCE. This is Jurassic Park. Inferior? Yes, but just as fun.
