Curry Barker’s Obsession is full of banal dialogue and one dimensional characters. Despite this, Barker stumbles into some emotionally complex truths about toxic & codependent relationships while flexing his true gift as a director, unexpected and perverse scares. A 26 year old helming a picture this technically proficient and crowd pleasing should be the big takeaway, but it’s Inde Navarrette as the Obsessor with a performance that totally dominates the movie. Navarrette plays Nikki with a physicality reserved for the likes of Cruise, Chaplain, and Keaton. Typically women as beautiful as Navarrette only appear in dreams, or in this case nightmares.
