The love that remains (2025)

The Love That Remains

If you look closely, between the killer whales and kitchen disputes, abstract art and errant arrows, you’ll find the magic of Hylnur Palmason’s intuitive and sometimes surrealist exploration of family life in Iceland. Like Eric Rohmer, Palmason lulls the viewer with the beauty of the mundane in an environment that is anything but. While the emotional consequentiality I expected might not be fully present, largely as a consequence of the magic of Hylnur’s intuitive style, the quiet moments of reflection and a charming family dynamic do their part in propelling this film to its conclusion, resulting in a satisfying watch.
