Twenty years ago Hokum might be the kind of movie you discover airing on some neglected corner of the TV guide. You’d turn it on late at night expecting little more than an entertainment vessel to carry you from PM to AM, instead receiving a punchy and off kilter horror picture that you can’t help but mention anytime the phrase “Do you know what’s really underrated-” is uttered. Director Damien McCarthy largely delivers on an engaging amalgamation of well executed concepts, although a tendency towards camp and over explanation steers this picture more towards peak Resident Evil than The Shining.
